How big is this market?

Our tracking puts the total Rust skin market at $284,974,894. That's every Rust skin in circulation, priced at what it's currently worth It is not the number that answers "how much of it could I actually buy right now." That number is $3.29 million, the value of everything actually listed for sale across the seventeen marketplaces we track. Less than 1.2% of the market is sitting in a listing you could click and buy today. That gap isn't a mistake. It's the most normal thing about any market like this, and understanding why is more useful than either number on its own.

How big is this market?

Two different questions, two different numbers

Think of it the way you'd think about a public company. A company's market cap is every share that exists, multiplied by the current price, whether or not any of those shares are up for sale today. The order book, what's actually listed to buy right now, is always a tiny fraction of that. Most shareholders aren't sellers. They're just holding. Rust skins work the same way. $284.97 million is the value of every skin that exists, at today's prices, whether the owner is selling it or not. $3.29 million is the float, what's actually listed across marketplaces at this moment. The other 98.8% of the market's value belongs to people who own skins and simply aren't listing them: players using items on their own character, collectors sitting on rare pulls, inventories nobody's touched in months. A market cap that size with a float that small tells you something specific: this is a market where most value is held, not traded. That's common in markets full of collectibles and cosmetics, and it's very different from, say, a currency market where nearly everything in circulation could plausibly change hands on a given day.

Why the $3.29 million number still matters

A market cap tells you how big the asset class is. It doesn't tell you how liquid it is, how fast you could actually buy or sell, or what a real transaction costs you right now. For that, you need the float, and the float is what we measure directly across all seventeen marketplaces: $3.29 million listed, spread unevenly, with one marketplace (marketcsgo) reporting numbers that don't survive a basic sanity check once you compare its claimed prices to everywhere else. Put the two numbers together and you get a fuller picture than either gives alone. $285 million says the market is real and has scale. $3.29 million says that on any given day, you're choosing from a small, thin slice of it, and prices on that thin slice can move a lot faster than the total market cap ever would, because it takes far less buying or selling pressure to shift a $3.29 million float than a $285 million total.

What we'll be watching

Market cap answers "is this worth paying attention to." Float, and how it moves day to day, answers "what's actually happening right now." Our first article laid out why the market exists at all. Our second showed why you can't trust a single marketplace's numbers without checking them against the rest. This is the third piece of that same foundation: know which number you're looking at, and know that a market this size trading through a float this thin is going to move faster, and less predictably, than the headline number suggests.
